Husbands and Wives

1 Peter 3:7 In the same way, you husbands should live with your wives in an understanding way, since they are weaker than you. You should show them respect, because God gives them the same blessing he gives you—the grace of true life. Do this so that nothing will stop your prayers from being heard.

Why is it that so many marriages either end in divorce or linger on as a joyless existence? Why is that – when marriage is meant to be the most incredible blessing from God, when it all started out so well, so romantically? Exactly why is that?

My wife Jacqui and I recently had a few days away from home and family and work commitments – just the two of us, a week of complete rest on our own.

You know, it’s not until you do that sometimes that you realise how hard you’ve been working and how tired the old body and mind really are.

Now there’s absolutely nothing wrong with hard work – I’m a great fan of it myself. But here’s how I figure it: God gave me the most beautiful wife. She is His blessing to me. That’s awesome, and it’s easy for all of us to forget that.

We work hard, as many couples do, but we also make a point of spending some special times together – of just resting and being a blessing to one another. And that’s a fantastic thing to do.

Can I encourage you, if you’re married, to do that with your wife or your husband as well? To plan something special. To surprise each other. Maybe it’s just breakfast in bed on the weekend or a date night at the movies. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive.

Marriage is such a blessing from God … and it’s easy, so easy, to forget that.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
