I Will Protect You

Psalm 27:10 Even if my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will take me up.

We all grow up with a basic need for protection. You see it even in animals. When my dog was a puppy, if we were out for a walk and she saw a big dog coming her way, she’d become afraid and she’d turn to me, to pick her up and protect her.

In the same way, children look to their parents for protection. They trust their parents to keep them safe. It’s the way it ought to be.

I have a good friend who’s now well into his seventies. He was an orphan growing up and I suspect that it still weighs on his mind. These days, he’s one of the most successful guys you’ll ever meet, but part of him is still … that orphan.

I was speaking one day at our church and one of the Scriptures I read out was this one:

Even if my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will take me up. (Psalm 27:10)

As you can imagine that had quite an impact on him and he came up afterwards and asked me again where that verse is in the Bible.

It sits right in the middle of Psalm 27 – a psalm all about God’s protection of His people. In fact, there’s a whole bunch of stuff in the Bible about God protecting His people.

Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and foes—they shall stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.

One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. (Psalm 27:1-5)

Yep, there are so many times in the Bible where God tells us about His protection for us.

But none is a poignant as this one verse, about the God who would protect even the child whose father and mother would forsake them. There can be nothing more terrifying for a little child than losing the love and protection of its parents.

Sadly though it happens. Whether because the parents chose to desert their child, or through wars, through death … it happens.

But listen to me, no matter how desperate things get, God will always protect us.

Even if my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will take me up.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
