I’m Worried

Philippians 4:6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

We all seem to have things to worry about: big things, little things, lots of things. But hang on – does worrying ever make things better? Does it ever fix the problem?

I mean, come on, when has worrying about something ever made anything better for you? When has it ever improved the situation or solved the problem? Well?

There are some people who spend their whole lives worrying about this and that. It’s like they completely ignore all the good things they have going on in their lives, and they focus instead, on the uncertainties. And let’s face it, we all have uncertainties in our lives and if we don’t, the worrier will certainly find some … and then spend their whole day, every day, thinking about all the things that could possibly go wrong. Right?

Worry is an unhealthy focus on things that might go wrong. And it eats away at you like a cancer.

God makes a lot of promises in His Word, that thing they call “the Bible” – a stack of them in fact. And please don’t get me wrong I love all His promises, but there’s one that stands out as my day-to-day favourite.

It’s not the greatest promise. It’s not the most important one by any stretch of the imagination – it’s just the one I seem to rely on a lot.

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

So what’s God saying to us here about worry?

Well, if you’re worried about something, He’s saying, take the time and the energy that you would have spent worrying about it, and instead spend them in prayer with a thankful heart. That’s great advice. Swap the time you would have spent worrying and use it, instead, in prayer.

Now, here’s the promise bit. If you do that, God will give you peace – peace that, in your circumstances, defies human logic. It surpasses all understanding. In fact, more than that, much more. God, with all His power and all His might – which, you’d have to say is at the very least, considerable – will protect your heart and mind, guard them, with His incredible peace, from the attacks of worry.

How different would your world be if you took God up on that one promise? How much more would the peace and joy of worry-free living, fill your life? Hmm.

Do not worry about anything … nothing … nil … nada.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
