It’s the Little Things

Luke 16:10 Whoever can be trusted with small things can also be trusted with big things. Whoever is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in big things too.

Can I ask you bluntly, up front today, are you right now, being tempted into some small dishonesty? Just a little thing that you think no one will notice?

Sometimes we like to imagine that the little things in life don’t matter. “If I cut a corner here, if I tell just a little white lie over there, hey, who’s going to notice?”

I have a friend in the jewellery business and the industry statistics on staff theft are frightening. Here they are:

Just 10% of staff are completely honest and won’t steal under any circumstance. A further 10% are dishonest and they’ll try to steal pretty much all the time. The remaining 80% will only steal from their employer, if they think that they won’t get caught.

So, this man has to run his business on the basis that 90% of his staff are likely to steal from him. That’s outrageous! Particularly in an industry where even the smallest gem, so easily concealed, can be worth so much.

So, obviously, he’ll only ever trust an employee to oversee large amounts, when they’ve proven themselves absolutely trustworthy with small amounts. Where have we heard that before?

Luke 16:10 Whoever can be trusted with small things can also be trusted with big things. Whoever is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in big things too.

All too often, we want to sweep the little things we do, the things we know don’t honour God, under the carpet.

Then we go to Him with all these grand visions of the great things we want to do for Him, but nothing happens. Why, what’s going on Lord? Maybe it’s because He’s waiting for us to get the little things sorted, because until we do, He couldn’t possibly trust us with the big things.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
