It’s the Thought that Counts

Acts 20:35 I always showed you that you should work just as I did and help people who are weak. I taught you to remember the words of the Lord Jesus: 'You will have a greater blessing when you give than when you receive.

Christmas presents. They can be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair. There are those presents that delight, and then, there are those that disappoint.

We’ve all received one of those Christmas presents where you unwrap it and you think to yourself, “Oh really? Surely not!” Anyway, you smile and thank the giver, but really, you didn’t want another cheap tie, or that dreadful perfume that you wouldn’t wear in a million years, or yet another cheese knife.

But it’s not just the fact that they’ve given you another lousy present. The thing that really disappoints, is that this person hasn’t even bothered to take the time or make the effort to understand who you are and at least buy you something that you’d really like, or that you really need.

It’s almost as though a thoughtless Christmas present is worse than no Christmas present at all. And the reason for that is, that it’s the thought that counts. The present tells us what the person giving it, thinks of us.

That’s why Christmas is so amazing. Because on that first Christmas day, God the Father gave us the very first Christmas Present, His one and only Son. He had nothing of greater value to give us, than Jesus. And there was nothing that we needed, more than a Saviour who was prepared to die for us.

And the reason that that first Christmas present is so amazing, is that it’s the thought that counts!

Acts 20:35 I always showed you that you should work just as I did and help people who are weak. I taught you to remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘You will have a greater blessing when you give than when you receive.

Christ-mas. What a blessing.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
