Just One More

John 8:31-34 So he said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you really are my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered, “We are Abraham’s descendants. And we have never been slaves. So why do you say that we will be free?” Jesus said, “The truth is, everyone who sins is a slave—a slave to sin.

One of the things I’ve realised the more my hair’s greyed as the years have marched on is that quite honestly, I’m a master of self-delusion. How about you? We can be so good at ignoring the obvious – the stuff that’s staring us right in the face.

I was waiting at an automatic teller machine the other day as two young women walked out of the bank to have a cigarette. One of them was coughing so badly, and as they lit up she turned to her friend and said – “So you think it’s bronchitis, do you?”

There was another guy standing in the queue with me. We looked at each other and to tell you the truth, we didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry. Bronchitis … really?!

But come on … we all do it, don’t we? We do really (let me put it as bluntly as I can) really stupid things and then we rationalise them away until we don’t notice; like the man who works so hard that he has no time for his family, or the boss who lords it over her staff and then wonders why they’re all leaving. Jesus … well, He has something pretty blunt to say about our stupidities as well:

John 8:31-34 So he said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you really are my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered, “We are Abraham’s descendants. And we have never been slaves. So why do you say that we will be free?” Jesus said, “The truth is, everyone who sins is a slave—a slave to sin.

Jesus. He came to set you free. Listen to Him … because when you do, the truth – His truth – will set you free.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
