Let’s Get Personal

John 13:34 I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other just as I loved you.

Have you noticed lately, just how impersonal the world has become? It’s as though all this great technology at our fingertips, instead of connecting us, only draws us further apart.

Every time I stand at the supermarket checkout, it hits me just how much the world’s changed. I remember as a young lad, going down to the corner store for my mother, and buying a pound of sugar that was weighed out and poured into a brown paper bag.

Of course, these days, you just go to the supermarket, which is open pretty much around the clock. Did you know that on average, each supermarket carries over forty-two thousand line items?

It’s such a bewildering array of choice, that there’s no way that the young man or woman behind the check-out, would ever be able to cope, if they had to remember all the prices, like back in the good old days.

No, the barcodes go over the laser scanner, bip, bip, bip” – then we swipe our credit or debit card through the terminal. And have you noticed, half the time; you don’t even talk to the person behind the checkout. We treat them almost as though they’re a machine!

Come on, when was the last time you made eye contact with the person behind the checkout? Smiled? Or said hello?

And it’s not just at the supermarket. We can live our whole lives like that – alone in our cars, in front of the television and smartphone screens.

In fact, these days, a lot of our shopping is done online, never coming close to interacting with a real person, let alone caring about how they feel.

It’s a scary thought, isn’t it?

John 13:34 I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other just as I loved you.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
