Lie #10: What We Do Doesn’t Matter

Matthew 13:40-42 Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

We live in a world of “anything goes”. If it feels good, do it – is pretty much the by line of this age. Don’t believe me? Stand up and tell people that sleeping around before you get married is wrong, and see what response you get. You’ll be shouted down, called names, told that you’re out of touch, told to keep your religion to yourself.

Because the Christian morality that most civilised societies are founded on, is being displaced by a relativistic, secular morality, that’s founded on the adage – if it feels good, do it.

And so in this day and age, one of the lies the devil loves telling us, is that the little things don’t matter. That slight arithmetical error on your tax return each year that surprisingly always falls in your favour. That harsh word to your co-worker. That lingering glance at the pretty young girl walking down the street.

They don’t matter. No one will notice. It’s alright. After all, if it feels good, do it. That’s what he tells us. Because they’re easy lies to tell. He’s not so much into the full on frontal assault. He prefers sniping away through the little things, those “small” compromises, because he knows that that’s the best way of weakening the foundations of our faith. And eventually, our foundations will become so unstable through the constant compromise, that our faith will topple.

So with the devil’s help, we become really, really good at sweeping our own sin under the carpet, while demanding perfection from others. Have you noticed that?

I know, I know … these days, sin is something of a “four letter word”. It gets a bad rap – “Oh give me a break! SIN?! Really? This isn’t the Middle Ages you know.”

So, perhaps it’s time for a wakeup call. And here it is:

Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:40-42)

Does God take sin seriously? Absolutely He does. Even the sin that we think of as “the small stuff”. And one day there will be a day of reckoning, make no mistake. That’s the bad news.

But here’s the good news. He takes your sin and mine so seriously, that He sent His Son Jesus to be brutally nailed to a cross to pay for it all. And when we put our trust in that Jesus, all our sin is forgiven.

So … is God serious about sin? Deadly serious.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
