Life Renovation

2 Corinthians 5:17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (NRSV)

Home renovations these days are all the rage. People seem to be renovating their homes like never before. Out with the old, in with the new. And, truth be known, you and I, time and time again, would benefit from that sort of restoration project too, wouldn’t we?

I was out the other morning walking along a beautiful, tree lined street when I noticed yet another of the old terrace houses in our area being renovated. The builders were there scraping the old paint off the front of the house and the place looked almost derelict, but in a few months it will become an exquisite blend of the old and the new – the same house, but a new creation.

If only we could renovate our lives, our personalities, in the same way –  a radical makeover on the inside. We all yearn at some point for a new start. We all wish we could scrape the old paint off and come up looking shiny new. But where do you get that sort of personal renovation?

Well, in a very real sense, that’s what God is all about. It might seem strange, but when He moves in, He kind of scrapes away the old rubbish. Sometimes we feel a bit like that terrace; derelict during the process, but in just a little while, we start to become an exquisite blend of the old and the new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

That’s one of my favourite verses in the Bible because it reminds me of what God’s up to in my life. Look, all that scraping and renovating is uncomfortable, even painful some days. And that verse encourages me to remember that the renovation, the restoration, the end result, is totally worth it.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
