Long Days, Short Years

Romans 13:10,11 Love doesn’t hurt others. So loving is the same as obeying all the law. I say this because you know that we live in an important time. Yes, it is now time for you to wake up from your sleep. Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

Whilst the average lifespan of the average person is on the increase in almost every nation around the world, you simply can’t rely on the average to estimate how long you have left in this world.

Recently a good friend of mine, Glenn, was feeling a bit off colour, a bit breathless. After a visit to the doctor and some tests, they rushed him into hospital for a triple bypass operation. Now, man … Glenn’s only fifty, fit as a fiddle, not overweight, never been a smoker, and goes surfing almost every morning.

He was the last person I’d have picked for three massively blocked arteries. He’s fully recovered now, praise God, but his story just underscores the point that you can’t rely on averages.

Perhaps you, like me, work hard at whatever you do and paradoxically, though the days seem long, the years seem short. The more focussed you are on what you do, the quicker those years seem to be slipping by.

And when life’s all said and done, the only legacy you and I will leave behind, the only imprint on people’s lives, will be the love that we showed them.

Friend, you don’t know how long you have left. Wake up, this is an important time. The time to love is now – now! Because the end … well, it’s perhaps much nearer than we think.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
