Nevertheless … Love
Psalm 73:21-24 When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.(ESV)
Without doubt, someone’s love toward us is at its finest when we don’t deserve it; when they hang in there with us when we’re bitter, when we’re behaving badly, brutishly. That right there, is the pinnacle of love.
We’ve all been bitter. We’ve all behaved badly. We’ve all been there. And as I said yesterday if you were able to join me, the bitterness in our soul over the bad things that’ve happened to us, the bad behaviour that’s followed, simply isn’t worth it.
Well of course it’s not. But pulling yourself out of that isn’t always easy. Sometimes, it’s downright impossible. What you need is someone who’ll love you in that place, when you perhaps don’t deserve it. Someone to hang in there with you when you’re beastly.
Here’s the psalmist again, praying, talking to God:
Psalm 73:21-24 When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.(ESV)
So, the guy was bitter, brutish, ignorant, beastly toward God. That’s quite a list. Nevertheless … God never left Him, instead, He held his right hand, guided him, counselled him and when He’d led him through it all, God received him into his glory.
That my friend, is the absolute pinnacle of love, the very same love that God has for you in your darkest hour. He will never leave you or forsake you. He will lead you through it all into His glory.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
