Obey Your Masters

Colossians 3:22 Servants, obey your masters in everything. Obey all the time, even when they can’t see you. Don’t just pretend to work hard so that they will treat you well. No, you must serve your masters honestly because you respect the Lord.

One of the most frustrating and even hurtful situations that we can face is having a difficult boss or at least someone in authority over us – be it a parent, or a boss or whoever – with whom we disagree. How do you handle that?

Truth be known, we often don’t handle it well at all. We don’t like it – in fact, we hate it – when people in authority over us make decisions we don’t like. Perhaps it was the right decision, perhaps it was the wrong one. It doesn’t matter. If we disagree, we tend not to behave all that well.

One of the most common responses is to take the foot off the pedal, to slow down, to take it easy. I’ll teach him! I just won’t work as hard. And so, slackness, idleness, passive-aggressive behaviour settles in. That’s how a workplace becomes toxic.

But … question … is that really any way for someone who calls themselves a Christian to behave?

Colossians 3:22 Servants, obey your masters in everything. Obey all the time, even when they can’t see you. Don’t just pretend to work hard so that they will treat you well. No, you must serve your masters honestly because you respect the Lord.

‘In everything’ and ‘all the time’ … ‘even when they can’t see you’ … ‘even when they don’t treat you well’ – there’s no wiggle-room there. There’s no let-out clause that says you only have to obey when you agree. Why?

Because, you must serve your masters honestly because you respect the Lord.

What a powerful witness of God’s love when people see you doing the right thing in tough circumstances, even when you’ve been treated harshly, even when you don’t feel like ‘playing the game’.

Obey your masters in everything. Obey all the time, even when they can’t see you.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
