Whom Are You Serving, Really?

Colossians 3:23 In all the work you are given, do the best you can. Work as though you are working for the Lord, not any earthly master.

When things aren’t going all that well, when we’re facing adversity, when there’s conflict – say, with a difficult boss at work – it’s amazing how our view is narrowed. We sang those great songs of worship last Sunday at church, but today … today, it becomes all about winning.

Conflict, be it at home, in the workplace, with your neighbours or with whomever, does indeed have a way of narrowing our focus. Our pride rises up and takes control.

I don’t deserve to be treated that way. I deserve better than that!

It’s particularly true in the workplace, especially when our work seems so mundane, so unrelated to the faith in Jesus that we profess to have. In fact, many people have their faith over here in one box and their work-life over there in another, as though those are two entirely separate things. But they’re not.

Colossians 3:23 In all the work you are given, do the best you can. Work as though you are working for the Lord, not any earthly master.

In other words, whatever you do … do it well. Do it with excellence. Do it in a way that brings honour to the name of Jesus because anything less than that is hypocrisy.

Professing to believe in the King of kings and the Lord of lords on the one hand, and doing a mediocre job on the other – or worse still, being lazy or dishonest – is indeed hypocrisy, and the world hates a hypocrite.

Worse still, our hypocrisy then brings the name of Jesus into disrepute. Is that really what we want to end up doing?

So whatever you turn your hand to, do the very best you can, because you’re not doing it for an earthly master alone. All that you do is for the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Honour Him with your excellence.
