On That Hill

Matthew 5:5-8 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (NRSV)You look at those million dollar ocean views in that photo and you think, “what an earth?” ! And what’s so incredibly awesome to me is that Jesus didn’t preach this stuff from heaven. He preached it on earth. On that hill. For you and me.

For many people, God seems a long way off – so far away in fact, that it’s easy to begin to wonder whether He’s truly even there. I strongly suspect that He knew that was going to happen, so He did something … well, completely unexpected.

I was looking at a stunning photo the other day of the hilltop where it’s believed that Jesus preached His famous Sermon on the Mount.

And to tell you the truth, I was shocked. It’s one thing to read about it but it’s quite another to see the place. It was so beautiful – a hill covered in yellow flowers looking out over the Sea of Galilee to the most spectacular sunrise you can ever imagine. And up on that hill, two thousand years ago, Jesus turned the world upside down.

God didn’t just reveal Himself through prophets and scrolls, but through creation and His Son.

This whole Christianity thing isn’t just some theory lesson and a bunch of rules to live by. It’s a rich, dynamic, vibrant relationship with the God who thought to splash those colours across the sky, those flowers over the hill, His Son upon a Cross.

It’s a personal relationship with Jesus who came to turn the world upside down, to bless the meek, to reveal Himself to the pure in heart.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
