Open House

Acts 2:46 The believers shared a common purpose, and every day they spent much of their time together in the Temple area. They also ate together in their homes. They were happy to share their food and ate with joyful hearts.

I wonder … what does “church” mean to you? Is it a building (for many it is)? Is it the traditional service that you attend on a Sunday? Is it an institution, a family, or … well, what does “church” mean to you?

These days the traditional view of church seems to be breaking down. Many of God’s people are drifting away. Some will say that they’re through playing games. Others will tell you that they’ve been burned at church. Maybe the recent pandemic has played its part.

How about you? What does “church” mean to you? How do you relate to the family of believers in Jesus Christ? As you turn those questions over in your mind, let’s see how things played out in the early church:

Acts 2:46,47 The believers shared a common purpose, and every day they spent much of their time together in the Temple area. They also ate together in their homes. They were happy to share their food and ate with joyful hearts.

At least thirteen times we’re told in the New Testament that believers met “house to house”, or in Cornelius’ house, or Mary’s or Lydia’s or the jailer’s house, and so on. However you do church though, there are three things that as a believer, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you should never neglect.

Firstly, a powerful shared common purpose with your brothers and sisters; that purpose of encouraging one other in the faith; that purpose of telling others about Jesus. Secondly, spending time together. And just as importantly, thirdly, eating together in each other’s homes, happily and joyfully.

Yes, church is worshipping, church is learning, but church is also being real, being a family, sharing a common purpose.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
