Political Correctness Gone Mad
1 Peter 1:13 So prepare your minds for service. With complete self-control put all your hope in the grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ comes.
One of the things that disturbs me greatly amongst God’s people is the growing sense that with our Christian freedoms under threat, as they clearly are in this day and age, the most important thing for us to do is to defend them.
It’s difficult not to come to the conclusion that political correctness has reached the level of the absurd. It’s something that threatens our freedom of expression, our freedom of belief, our freedom to live out our Christian faith.
A not uncommon reaction is to circle the wagons, to defend our faith and our freedom of expression. Now don’t get me wrong, those two things are very dear to my heart too … but when Christian tribalism takes over the direction of our public discourse, I sincerely believe that we’ve lost the plot as people called by Christ’s name.
1 Peter 1:13 So prepare your minds for service. With complete self-control put all your hope in the grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ comes.
Peter wrote those words to some terribly persecuted Christians. He didn’t call them to win the argument, but quite the opposite – to prepare their minds for service with complete self-control. As William M Comfort put it … self-control is more often called for than self-expression.
Should Christians be part of the public debate? Should we help guide discussion and build the moral fibre of society? Absolutely! But our principal role on this earth is not to win arguments, but to win souls. Which is exactly what Peter is saying:
So prepare your mind for service. With complete self-control put all your hope in the grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ comes.
Don’t let Christian tribalism hijack your main purpose. Our King reigns and we have every right to put all our hope in His grace.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
