Replacing the Good with the Bad

Genesis 1:29 God said, "I am giving you all the grain bearing plants and all the fruit trees. These trees make fruit with seeds in it. This grain and fruit will be your food.

Over the last century, there’s been a food revolution as food manufacturers have invented delicacies that we love to eat. Why? Because they’re in the business of making money. That’s what they do, and they’ve figured out that sugar is every bit as addictive as cocaine. So, the more of it they put in our food, the more of it we’ll buy. It’s a pretty simple formula.

Now I use that word “manufacturers” quite deliberately, because most of the food we’re eating today, is being manufactured. We call it “processed food” and judging by the escalation of obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, it’s killing us.

But from the beginning, God gave us some really good things to eat.

God said, “I am giving you all the grain bearing plants and all the fruit trees. These trees make fruit with seeds in it. This grain and fruit will be your food. (Genesis 1:29)

Not a hint of sugar-laden muesli that we thought was healthy, or orange juice where one glass has the sugar of five oranges, without the fibre which is the antidote to the poisonous sugar that’s killing us, or processed meats, or tomato sauce which is generally around 35% sugar by weight. No, just good, old-fashioned, unprocessed and incidentally, absolutely delicious, foods.

So, a few years back, I started a quiet food revolution of my own, replacing the bad foods with good foods. These days, I pretty much don’t eat anything that’s been made in a factory. It’s back to basics – the eggs the chickens lay, the butter made from cow’s milk, all the brilliant vegetables that grow in the ground.

I’d forgotten how delicious vegetables are with a bit of healthy olive oil and vinegar. Nuts, a couple of pieces of real fruit a day. All the stuff that God made and that people used to eat back when heart disease, diabetes and stroke were virtually non-existent.

Sure, it takes focus and a bit of effort, but strangely, the longing I once had for processed foods is gone.

And as I’ve mentioned before, I’ve lost a stack of weight and my doctor is over the moon with my blood test results. Simply by replacing bad food with the good food that God made for and provided for us from the very beginning.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
