Safe to Try at Home
Matthew 17:20 Jesus answered, "You were not able to make the demon go out, because your faith is too small. Believe me when I tell you, if your faith is only as big as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. You will be able to do anything.
It’s a good thing, to be surrounded by men and women of great faith. But have you ever noticed, how you end up comparing your faith with theirs, and then you come to the conclusion that your faith simply doesn’t stack up?
I used to hear people talking about having the sort of faith that moves mountains. And I’d think to myself, “Yeah, sure, one day, when I’m a super-spiritual Christian, all grown up like that guy over there, then I’ll have faith like that too. But right now, nah, I just don’t have it.”
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, right? It’s a bit like those magicians on television, who do dangerous tricks, and they warn you: “Don’t try this at home.” We imagine that using your faith, deploying it to have an impact for Christ in this world, is for someone else. Certainly not for us!
And yet, Jesus took a bunch of uneducated fisherman, tax collectors, nobodies, ordinary people like you and me, called them to be His disciples and then expected them to have that sort of faith.
Matthew 17:20 Jesus answered, “You were not able to make the demon go out, because your faith is too small. Believe me when I tell you, if your faith is only as big as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. You will be able to do anything.
Jesus expected His disciples to exercise their faith to make a difference in this world for Him, even if it was as small as a mustard seed.
It turns out, all we need is a small amount of faith, in a mighty God. And no matter, how small we think our faith is compared to the next person’s, Jesus expects us to put it to good use on this earth.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
