Speak Up!

Proverbs 31:8,9 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. Stand up for what you know is right, and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.

In any society, any community, there are winners and there are losers. And when you’re fortunate enough to be one of the winners, the tendency is to care less and less about the plight of the losers.

Whatever you may think about COVID vaccination – and I understand that there are different views – over this past nine months or so, there’s been the race for nations to vaccinate, to reduce deaths, and to return to some sense of normality.

The wealthier nations have done extremely well, with high vaccination rates and plummeting death tolls. They were able to afford to buy up big when prices were high, and win the race.

And if you, like me, live in one of those wealthy nations, enjoying our freedoms once more, that’s old news. But if you live in Syria, in parts of Africa, in other developing nations, the experts say that it’s likely to take until 2030 to reach those same levels of coverage.

That’s inequity on a macro scale. But inequity also happens at a local, micro level.

Proverbs 31:8,9 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. Stand up for what you know is right, and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.

Friend, if you happen to be one of the winners – food on your table, a roof over your head, and a soft bed to sleep in pretty much qualifies you as such – don’t forget those around you who are losing.

Speak up for them. Help them when they’re in trouble. Stand up for what’s right. Protect the rights of the poor and those in need of help.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
