That One Thing

Psalm 16:11 You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

I wonder whether sometimes you find yourself suffering from “next” syndrome – that next thing I buy, the next experience I have, that next stage in my life … then I’ll be happy? Some people live their whole lives that way, but never find the contentment, the fulfillment that they’re looking for.

I wonder sometimes why it took me so long to figure this out. I mean, I’m not stupid … really, I’m not. And yet it took me the first thirty six years of my life to figure this out.

Every day, I’d get up, do the same thing, go out there, be successful … and I was. Go out there, make money … and I did. Go out there, build a career, have a nice car, buy all the stuff I wanted to buy. I did all those things over and over and over and over and over again. But the more I did, the more I realised I just wasn’t fulfilled. And so, the more I did it.

I spent half a lifetime looking for that one thing that would fill me up inside; that one thing that would finally let me get off that treadmill; that one thing that would fill my heart with a quiet contentment. A joy. A peace. That one thing …

Psalm 16:11 You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

The more we consume what this world has to offer, the emptier we can feel. But the closer we draw to God, the One who sent His Son Jesus to die for us, the more we discover that which we have, for so long, been searching for.

In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

That one thing … that’s it!

And that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
