The Bad Boss

1 Peter 2:18 Slaves, be willing to serve your masters. Do this with all respect. You should obey the masters who are good and kind, and you should obey the masters who are bad.

Many workplaces are a powder keg, waiting to go off. The tension in some organisations is palpable and sometimes it’s management’s fault. So, how do you react, how do you cope in a difficult workplace?

Have you ever had a bad boss at work? You know, the sort you can never please. No matter what you do, they’ll still undermine you. When it comes to handing out praise, you never quite seem to be in the running. And when you do the right thing, they still manage to belittle you in front of your peers.

It’s not all that uncommon. A recent survey found that over three quarters of the workers, if I can call them that, felt that their bosses at middle management and above were incompetent. That’s not such a happy statistic, is it?

So, what do you do with them? How do you respond when you’re dealing, day after day, with a boss like that?

Well, you can rebel, of course, or leave – those are clear options. Or perhaps, you can apply some of God’s counterintuitive wisdom to the situation:

1 Peter 2:18 Slaves, be willing to serve your masters. Do this with all respect. You should obey the masters who are good and kind, and you should obey the masters who are bad.

You see, God’s alternative is to be true to yourself, to remain loyal to your employer and just keep on doing what you’ve been hired to do. That may seem … silly, stupid, completely outrageous. But let me ask you – what do you think Jesus would do?

We never know what hurt lies behind someone’s bad behaviour. What if God put you there, to show that boss the love of Christ in a way that only you can? Well, what if?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
