The Boundaries of the Heart
Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (NRSV)
After a hard day at the office, a great many people don’t think too much about what they watch on TV, or who they socialise with, or what ideas they allow into their minds. And yet those things, as it turns out, are incredibly important.
Setting boundaries in your life is incredibly important. But not all boundaries are good boundaries. As things turn out, we need to set the right boundaries in the right places. And nowhere is that more important than the boundaries that we set around our hearts.
Set them too tightly and you become mean-spirited, stingy, selfish and critical. Set them too loosely and anyone can come in and treat your heart like their own personal doormat. The truth is that some people allow others to ruin their lives by letting them plunder their hearts with all sorts of lies.
As I said, not every boundary is a good boundary. We need to set the right boundaries in the right places. And the only place I know where I can learn that is in God’s Word.

God cares about your heart – a lot. So … what boundaries have you set up around your heart? What TV shows and movies do you watch? And on the flip side of that coin, to what extent do you open your Bible day-to-day? To what extent do you allow God’s Word to be the thing that shapes who you are, how you see life, how you think?
The things we allow into our hearts are going to change the course of our lives, for better or for worse.
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
