The Dog with Two Masters
Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one and love the other, or you will be loyal to one and not care about the other. You cannot serve God and Money at the same time.
Can I ask you today how important is money to you? I don’t mean just enough to put food on the table, clothes on your back and a roof over your head. How much do you dream of becoming wealthy?
Money can become as addictive as heroin, and when that happens your whole life becomes consumed with the desire to get more … and the more you have, the more you discover that money can’t fill that deep void within.
Jesus put it this way:
Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one and love the other, or you will be loyal to one and not care about the other. You cannot serve God and Money at the same time.
Interesting that Jesus doesn’t use the word “money” – instead He talks about wealth. The Aramaic word is mammon, which means treasure or riches. It carries with it the sense that money has become more than just money. It’s more like an idol – wealth personified if you will.
And what He’s really saying is that you can’t be a dog with two masters. If one says stay and the other says go, which one are you going to obey? You cannot serve God and wealth at the same time. So the problem isn’t money – it’s our desire for money, because that desire ends up being the guiding force of our lives.
We’ve all chased after wealth at some point, dreamt about being rich, wished we just had a little bit more to help make ends meet – and yet you and I know that money can’t satisfy the deepest longings of our heart.
There’s a reason for that. You can’t be a dog with two masters. It’s one or the other.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
