The Faithful Love of God

Psalm 94:16-19 No one helped me fight against the wicked. No one stood with me against those who do evil. And if the LORD had not helped me, I would have been silenced by death. I know I was ready to fall, but, LORD, your faithful love supported me. I was very worried and upset, but you comforted me and made me happy!

So, at what point did we come to the conclusion that it’s all up to us –  that following Jesus along that narrow, often difficult path is completely our responsibility, that if we fall, we fall, if we’re afraid, we’re on our own? At what point, exactly?

There’s a fine line between obedience and legalism, between a heart to honour God in all that we do, and this crazy idea that in doing it, in living it, we’re on our own. Whoops, I blew it here. God’s going to be angry with me! Man, I’m feeling down today. God’s going to be disappointed with me.

As natural as those emotions are, let me be plain as day; they are completely wrong. It’s crazy to think that way, and when we do, we can be absolutely certain that we’ve lost sight of who God really is.

Listen here to the psalmist reflect, as he looks back on days of great peril in his life:

Psalm 94:16-19 No one helped me fight against the wicked. No one stood with me against those who do evil. And if the LORD had not helped me, I would have been silenced by death. I know I was ready to fall, but, LORD, your faithful love supported me. I was very worried and upset, but you comforted me and made me happy!

That’s the truth. That’s the reality. Listen to me. There are going to be situations, circumstances, times in our lives when no one else comes to help. When no one else stands by us.

So when you’re ready to fall, know this: The faithful love of God is right there to support you. When you’re afraid and upset, He’s there to comfort you. That’s who He is. It’s not all up to you.  That’s the truth.

And that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
