The Hidden Work of God

There are seasons in everyone’s life when God seems to vanish – not in theory, but in lived reality. You keep doing the right things – praying, serving, showing up – and yet everything falls apart. You can’t trace His hand, you can’t sense His presence, and the silence feels like abandonment.
Amy Carmichael, a missionary to India, once wrote from her sickbed, “God has never failed me, and He will not fail you.” For the last twenty years of her life she was bedridden after a fall – her ministry halted, her strength gone.
Yet through that long silence, she kept writing, praying, and trusting. Out of that darkness came books that have inspired countless people since. Looking back, she saw that God had refined not her work but her heart.

Job wasn’t speaking from comfort but literally from ashes. He’d lost his children, wealth, health, home and reputation – everything that once gave his life security and joy. And in the midst of it all, he couldn’t find God anywhere. And yet – he trusted that God was still at work in what he couldn’t see.
That’s the paradox of faith: God often does His deepest work when He seems most silent. Testing doesn’t expose your weakness – it reveals His strength in you.
I’ve certainly been through times like that that’ve made me who I am today. Doubtless, you have too. Perhaps you’re even in one of those times right now. So today, if you’re walking through darkness, stop trying to feel Him and start trusting that He’s there. Because even in silence, God is refining gold.
