The One Thing

Romans 15:13 I pray that the God who gives hope will fill you with much joy and peace as you trust in him. Then you will have more and more hope, and it will flow out of you by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It seems that we’re all wired in one way or another to seek pleasure, gratification, joy, peace, happiness … whatever you want to call it. And yet the tragedy of it all is that most of us go looking for it in all the wrong places.

A question: What’s the one thing missing in your life? I mean, if you had to name just one thing that you’d really, really like to have, what would it be?

A relationship? I’d love to be married … I wish I had a better marriage … I wish I could get on with my two teenagers.

A better job, or a better boss perhaps? Just a few more thousand a year for life’s little luxuries. A great holiday. What would it be?

We all have that one thing. If only I could have …

But deep down you and I both know that, if we had that thing, then there’d be yet another thing on the list, would there not? And another, and another …

It seems that “that one thing”, whatever it may be in your life, never quite has the ability to satisfy; because deep down, God has placed a yearning in our heart – whether we realise it or not, whether we’re prepared to recognise it or not – for something much greater.

The Apostle Paul said this to his friends in Rome:

Romans 15:13 I pray that the God who gives hope will fill you with much joy and peace as you trust in him. Then you will have more and more hope, and it will flow out of you by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Something tells me that Paul was praying in the right direction for those Roman Christians – joy, peace and hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.

That “one thing” …it’ll never satisfy you. Only God can.
