The Tender Love of God

1 John 3:1 The Father has loved us so much! This shows how much he loved us: We are called children of God. And we really are his children. But the people in the world don’t understand that we are God’s children, because they have not known him.

It’s a rough and tumble world that we live in. Criticism can be hurled your way without notice. Those feelings of inadequacy rise up and before you know it, the lie that God can’t possibly love me raises its ugly head.

When was the last time that you were bruised through a brutal encounter with someone else – perhaps at work, or in your circle of friends, or even at home? It leaves you feeling damaged, doesn’t it?

And the more it happens, the more your inadequacies seem to shout at you that you will never, ever, be good enough for God – that He will never, ever say those words to you that we all long to hear: Well done, good and faithful servant.

If any of that’s been eating away at you, then today, with all my heart, I believe that God Himself wants to speak His tender love for you into your heart:

1 John 3:1 The Father has loved us so much! This shows how much he loved us: We are called children of God. And we really are his children. But the people in the world don’t understand that we are God’s children, because they have not known him.

I was reminded of how great His love for His children is recently, as last Sunday we celebrated my granddaughter Olivia’s second birthday. And whilst, of course, I love each of my children beyond words, they’re all grown up now.

There’s something different though about loving a small child. And as we sang Happy Birthday, the love I feel for her brought tears to my eyes. It overwhelmed me. And if I, a sinner, can love like that, how much more does God love you?

The truth is that He has loved you so much that He calls you a child of God. His child.

And that’s His Word. Fresh… for you… today.
