Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way
Proverbs 23:20-21 Don't make friends with people who drink too much wine and eat too much food. Those who eat and drink too much become poor. They sleep too much and end up wearing rags.
I know that we’ve been hammering this whole eating and diet thing over the past few days. But honestly, how often do you go to church on a Sunday and hear a sermon on health, on exercise, on being good stewards of this amazing body that God’s given us? Hmm?
The risk is that we completely over-spiritualise our faith journey. The risk is that we forget that as people made in God’s image, we not only have a spirit and a soul, but a body as well. And what an incredible gift this body is.
As I’ve been telling you, for most of my adult life, I was obese. Not just overweight, obese, and I knew that if I didn’t do something about it, I’d be headed to an early grave. My doctor – rotten guy that he is – was happy to confirm my layman’s prognosis. Now, I watched my dad die of diabetes. What happens is that your flesh literally starts to rot. Your body starts dying around you. It’s a terrible way to go.
The problem was that I’d struggled with my weight all my life; seriously struggled and I’d always lost the battle. But this time, I was determined to win. So I did my research and since the whole low fat dieting thing had never worked, I struck on the most recent research which is telling us – it’s not the fat dummy, it’s the 70 kgs of sugar that the average westerner is consuming each year, that’s killing us.
Yes, we’ve spoken about sugar before and no, I’m not one of these people to focus on just a single thing. But truly, this is the 800 pound gorilla in the room.
The mass production of sugar only began in earnest in the early 20th century. Before then, you had to be near a fruit tree in season or persuade a swarm of bees to part with their honey to get sugar into you. It was truly a very rare commodity. But these days, we consider it normal to eat it in bucket-loads; ten times more of it than people used to eat back then.
So I gave it a spin. I removed the sugar. And the weight came off and stayed off rather easily.
It turns out that where there’s a will, there’s a way.
I believe that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
