Wait for the Beginning

Romans 8:22-23 We know that everything God made has been waiting until now in pain like a woman ready to give birth to a child. Not only the world, but we also have been waiting with pain inside us. We have the Spirit as the first part of God’s promise. So we are waiting for God to finish making us his own children. I mean we are waiting for our bodies to be made free.

There’s a certain inevitability to childbirth. A woman carries another human being around in her body, feeding, protecting, nurturing that little person, waiting, waiting, waiting … until … BANG, the first contraction strikes. A child is born.

As you look around at all that’s going on in the world, man, things are a mess aren’t they?

The untold suffering of tens of millions of slaves, still today. The many wars that are raging, still today. Young people going astray either into lives of crime, or of dependency, or of a kind of numbness amidst their growing affluence – a mass of humanity, many of whom are living lives that deep down they know aren’t worth living.

I sound like a real pessimist today, don’t I? But come on, look around! Everyone can see it. Everyone can feel it. What comes next? How does this all end? Writes the Apostle Paul two thousand years ago …

There’s a certain inevitability to this whole darned shootin’ match coming to an end. Waiting, waiting, waiting … and then … BANG! Those who’ve put their faith in Jesus, those who have His Spirit in them, those who are His children … will be set free.

Because that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
