Wake Up

2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

It’s funny how when you’re reading something, you can miss one little word and it changes the whole meaning. I mean a single word can completely change the meaning of something, turn it around one hundred and eighty degrees.

The other day, I was sending an email to our web developers – the subject line was meant to read: “Data Exports Not Working” – but what I actually typed, before I caught my mistake, was “Data Exports Now Working”. A single letter completely changed the meaning of the whole subject.

And I find, when we’re reading a Bible verse, particularly one that we’re really familiar with, it is so easy to miss a little word here and there that also, changes the whole meaning.

There’s one particular verse that I did that with for years. A single word I missed by glossing over it again and again – and so … I missed out on what God was trying to tell me. Just one word.

Here’s the verse:

If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

The one word I kept on missing was the word “see” – or “behold” as some of the older Bible translations put it.

I used to read that last phrase as “everything old has passed away and everything has become new” but what it actually says is “everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!”

Or as we might say it today – if we’re trying to convince someone of something that’s difficult to get your mind around – and this particular promise of God is just that – we’d say, “Wake up! Don’t you realise? Look at this. I want you to see this. When you believe in Jesus everything has become new.”

It’s like … a wake-up call from God. And I believe, in fact, I know, that it’s a wake-up call that He wants you to wake up to today. I feel like, today, God is saying to you and me – look at this! Do you get it? I’m your Dad, I love you so much. And I want you to see this completely new life that Jesus bought for you.

And you know what’s special about that? If I say it to you, it’s nice, but that’s as far as it goes. But when God says it, just one Word from God packs so much power, that it transforms your life.

The Bible says that God calls into being that don’t as yet exist. How true is that! God spoke all of creation into being. And today … today He’s speaking your completely new life into being. By His Word, the power of the past over you is completely broken.

See?! Everything is new.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
