We Know How it Ends

Revelation 20:10 And he (the one who tricked these people) was thrown into the lake of burning sulphur with the beast and the false prophet. There they would be tortured day and night forever and ever.

Some days, it feels as though evil is winning out over good; injustice over justice; hatred over love; arrogance over humility; deception over truth. Some days, that’s how it seems.

You look around and what you see is that evil people appear to be prospering. Bad people are getting richer and more powerful. While good people seem to be suffering and getting poorer. In fact, you just have to switch on the evening news, and it’s easy to come to the conclusion that this world is going to hell in a handbag. It’s easy to come to the conclusion that the devil is winning. And then, then you start thinking to yourself, why do I even bother?

But there is good news. And that good news is this … we know how this all ends.

Do you believe in the devil – Satan, a real, personal, powerful, spiritual force of evil? I certainly do. Not because I’m in any way super-spiritual or over-spiritual, and not because I’ve flipped my lid.

I believe in the existence and the power of the devil, quite simply, because Jesus did. And as though that’s not reason enough – hey, look around. Blind Freddy can see the evil running rampant in this world.

But the mistake we can make in believing in the devil, particularly as we look around and see the mess he’s making of people’s lives, is also to believe that he’s somehow just as powerful as God. As though there are two equal and opposite forces fighting it out for supremacy and who knows who’s going to win. The devil would love you to believe that. The point is though, it’s just not true.

And he (the one who tricked these people) was thrown into the lake of burning sulphur with the beast and the false prophet. There they would be tortured day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:10)

We know how this all ends, and it doesn’t end well for the devil. Not at all.

So the next time it seems that the devil’s winning, the next time you feel like giving up, remember this. Your King reigns. He sees it all and one day, in the not too distant future, He is coming back in glory to gather His own into His loving arms, so that we can spend the rest of eternity with Him.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
