What’s In it For Me?
Matthew 5:15,16 People don’t hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.
There are two directions for God’s blessings to flow through your life. Inwards, and outwards. To tell you the truth, we need both. But for many, life gets skewed, because they have an unhealthy focus on one of those, above the other.
So, what do you have planned for the year ahead? What’s your objective? What do you want to achieve? What are you hoping the year will bring?
When I was much younger, I used to imagine what I could get out of it. In short, my question was, What’s in it for me? What am I going to achieve? What am I going to earn? What recognition am I going to get for myself?
That’s pretty common in this me-me-me world in which we live. But the older I get, the more I’ve come to realise (and I’ve been an incredibly slow learner in this department) that it’s much more satisfying, much more exciting to be asking, What impact can I have in this world? What difference can I make in the lives of others?
Jesus put it like this:
Matthew 5:15,16 People don’t hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.
Can I ask you, would you do us all a favour this year? Don’t hide your lamp under a bowl. Shine your light into the world around you. Because the rest of us, those of us who can’t do what you can do, we need who God made you to be.
Don’t hide your lamp under a bowl. Shine it out for the world to see.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
