Who Comes First?

Matthew 19:21,22 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, then go and sell all that you own. Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come and follow me!” But when the young man heard Jesus tell him to give away his money, he was sad. He didn’t want to do this, because he was very rich. So he left.

We kid ourselves sometimes that we can have it all – that we can follow Jesus on the one hand and yet still hang onto things that, in our heart of hearts, we put before God. Like I said, we kid ourselves!

The thing that stops many people from giving their lives completely to Jesus is the fear of what they might have to give up.

Like the rich young ruler who asked Jesus what he needed to do to inherit eternal life … he ticked all the boxes when it came to the Ten Commandments, but still, in his heart of hearts, he knew that something wasn’t quite right.

Jesus looked at him and knew immediately what that one thing was in this man’s life – his wealth came before His God.

So he left.

Is God calling all of us to sell everything and give it away to the poor? No. It’s just that in this man’s case, He knew that this was the one thing that in his heart this man valued more than God.

Anything that we put before God is an idol and that’s not how this works.

Do you want to call yourself a Christian? Do you want to follow Jesus? If the answer is yes, then God comes first. Now, the blessings that flow from that choice are indescribable. But first, God comes first.

Either Jesus comes first in our hearts, or He doesn’t.

So, what’s your “one thing?”

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
