Why Obedience is Liberating
1 Peter 1:14 In the past you did not have the understanding you have now, so you did the evil things you wanted to do. But now you are children of God, so you should obey him and not live the way you did before.
Discipline is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, none of us enjoys being disciplined. Ever. On the other hand, without discipline, without being taught obedience, we would be terrible, terrible people.
When we were children, we thought as children, we acted like children. And, truth be known, it wasn’t always pretty because we were born, you and I, with an over-inflated sense of self.
Immaturity is when you behave like a child, because you’re only interested in what’s in it for you, with no consideration for others. That’s what children do.
Enter our parents. My father was quite the disciplinarian. I didn’t much enjoy the discipline at the time. Who ever does? But thank God for my father. Thank God for the discipline that he dished out, because that’s where I learned to obey him.
Imagine what I’d be like, if he hadn’t disciplined me? Imagine what you’d be like if your parents hadn’t disciplined you? The sad thing is, there are adults wandering around who behave more like children because they were never disciplined by their parents. They still think that the world revolves around them.
It turns out that discipline is quite liberating, because it leads to obedience and obedience sets you free to live the sort of life that God always planned, free from the slavery of self. Free from the slavery of sin.

I know obedience isn’t your favourite word. But then, God asks us to give up only the stuff that’s going to hurt us.
