Your Job and Mine
John 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (ESV)
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I look at all that’s going on in this world – the way people are behaving, the direction things are headed – and I think to myself, this world is going to hell in a handbag.
And man, isn’t it easy to become so disillusioned, so critical, so judgemental of those “sinners out there”. We want to get up on our theological high horse and complain about this group, damn that group and ask God to shut them the hell up.
Yeah, I know, perhaps that’s a bit blunt. But isn’t that how it sometimes feels? And so, many a Christian, many a person who considers themselves to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, ends up with a stinking, judgemental attitude that either has them arguing with all and sundry, or retreating into their holy huddle to keep away from those “sinners out there” – as though somehow we’re better than everyone else.
But is that really our job? Is that really how Christ calls us to live?

Let’s just stop and think about that for a minute. If Jesus didn’t come to condemn the world, then it’s probably not our job either. And if Jesus came to save the world … hey, maybe that’s the business we should be in as well.
Of course, it’s easy to grumble about everything and everyone! But I’m fairly certain that’s not why God keeps your heart and mine beating. Our job isn’t to condemn the world. Our job is to set about saving it.
