Your Risk-Reward Ratio

Matthew 5:11,12 People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do that, know that great blessings belong to you. Be happy about it. Be very glad because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven.

We each have a different risk-reward ratio at play in our lives. Some are prepared to take greater risks for greater rewards. Others are more conservative in their approach, settling for lesser rewards but a safer life.

I wonder, as you think about it, what your risk-reward ratio is.

One of the greatest risks that we can take in life is to put off a smaller reward today in order to gain a greater reward in the future. In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, researcher Dr Kaileigh Byrne is quoted as saying: “People are generally more motivated by immediate gratification or immediate benefits rather than long-term benefits, even when the long-term benefits are much greater.” That is, no doubt, quite true.

So let’s think about that in terms of the price you pay in your relationships today for following Jesus, and the risks you’re prepared to take in order for that much greater long-term reward. Because as Jesus said …

Matthew 5:11,12 People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do that, know that great blessings belong to you. Be happy about it. Be very glad because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven.

So how do you react when people insult you, hurt you, lie about you, say evil things about you because you follow Jesus? Are you shocked, hurt, motivated toward revenge? I guess revenge would bring some instant gratification.

Or you could take the risk of delayed reward. You could be happy about it, very glad about it. Why? Because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
