A Helping Hand

Hebrews 10:24,25 We should think about each other to see how we can encourage each other to show love and do good works. We must not quit meeting together, as some are doing. No, we need to keep on encouraging each other. This becomes more and more important as you see the Day getting closer.

When you see someone heading in the wrong direction, about to make a mistake that’s going to hurt them or those around them, helping them to get things right … well, it just ain’t easy.

We chatted briefly about this yesterday … that ultimately, it’s only God who can change someone’s heart. We can argue with people until we’re blue in the face, but so often their stubbornness and pride prevents them from receiving our well-intentioned advice.

But there’s something else that often stops them from receiving good advice. It’s a roadblock that we ourselves set up. Think about it. How often has someone’s harsh criticism of you caused you to sit up and take notice? Their belligerent tone, their superior attitude … none of those things tend to have a positive impact. But there is an alternative:

Hebrews 10:24,25 We should think about each other to see how we can encourage each other to show love and do good works. We must not quit meeting together, as some are doing. No, we need to keep on encouraging each other. This becomes more and more important as you see the Day getting closer.

Encouragement to show love and do good works …now there’s a thought. Do you like to be encouraged? I certainly do. We all do. That person heading in the wrong direction, that “idiot” whose head we’d like to rip off in that moment, is in point of fact made in the image of God, with gifts and abilities that, if channelled in the right direction, could well end up showing love and doing good works.

Hang in there. Keep meeting with them. We need to keep on encouraging each other.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
