A Lukewarm Life

Revelation 3:15,16 I know what you do. You are not hot or cold. I wish that you were hot or cold! But you are only warm—not hot, not cold. So I am ready to spit you out of my mouth.

Yep, we just want to diddley-bop through life … sure, I believe in Jesus … now, what about my next promotion, that next holiday, what does he think about me, she looks smarter than me … that’s how, all too often, it goes.

So, have you ever drunk a glass of lukewarm water? It’s absolutely disgusting, isn’t it?! You just want to spit it out. And that’s precisely the impulse that Jesus has when He encounters a lukewarm Christian. This is how He puts it:

Revelation 3:15,16
I know what you do. You are not hot or cold. I wish that you were hot or cold! But you are only warm—not hot, not cold. So I am ready to spit you out of my mouth.

And when you think about it in the context of that lukewarm glass of water … well, you kind of understand where He’s coming from.

The devil on the other hand … well, my hunch is that he absolutely loves lukewarm Christians. You know the sort; comfortable, suburban, pew-sitting Christians whose lives don’t really ever count for Christ, whose lives don’t weigh in and make a practical, powerful difference in this world in Jesus’ name – christians who are just plain lukewarm.

Yeah, I’m pretty certain that the devil delights himself in those people, because they’re no threat. Certainly they’ll never tell anyone about Jesus. They’ll probably never show the enduring love and kindness to someone who doesn’t deserve it, either. Yep, lukewarm means no threat at all!

Jesus, on the other hand, is so deeply passionate about you and me that He died for us on that cross. And that same Jesus has a plan for your life and mine, for us to stand for something, to make a difference in this world, to draw people to Himself through us.

Don’t be a lukewarm Christian.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
