Abide with Me

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and be brave. Don’t be afraid of those people because the Lord your God is with you. He will not fail you or leave you.

In this transactional, disposable world, in a world where almost half or all marriages end up on the trash heap, it’s becoming more and more difficult to understand something important about God. His faithfulness.

There’s a beautiful old hymn called “Abide with me”. You may know it.

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, Lord, abide with me.

Now that word “abide” isn’t one that we use all that much these days, mores’ the pity, because it speaks of a deep relationship, a permanent relationship, a closeness, a heart connection that never ends. Abiding isn’t just a quick email or SMS, it’s hanging in there with someone through thick and thin, on and on.

And that’s something that throughout the Word of God, throughout the Bible, from beginning to end, God promises to do for us.

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and be brave. Don’t be afraid of those people because the Lord your God is with you. He will not fail you or leave you.

So when the eventide falls, when the darkness deepens, when other helpers fail, when comforts flee, when we feel helpless and cry out, “Lord abide with me”. We can be absolutely certain, you and I, that the Lord our God is in this place; that the Lord our God hasn’t given up in His abiding with us; that indeed, He will never leave us, fail us or forsake us.

And as we continue to experience His faithfulness, the amazing love of God becomes a reality so that no matter what you face, you can be strong and brave.

Oh God as the darkness deepens, other helpers fail and comforts flee … abide with me O Lord.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
