Are You Kidding You?

2 Corinthians 13:5 Look closely at yourselves. Test yourselves to see if you are living in the faith. Don't you realise that Christ Jesus is in you? Of course, if you fail the test, he is not in you.

Can I ask you, what bad behaviour, what bad habit of yours, is eating away at the foundations of your life? What is it, that you’re doing, that’s robbing you of God’s joy and peace?

I firmly believe that when it comes to behaving badly, we’re all masters of self-delusion. We kid ourselves that we’re living a good life, we rationalise away our bad behaviour, when all along, it’s ruining our lives. You’ve probably heard that saying – are you kidding me? And we all know what it means.

But let me ask you – are you kidding yourself? Are you living in self-denial, self-delusion, by rationalising away some bad habit, some bad behaviour that’s actually undermining your life, holding you back, ruining your relationships?

Now, asking those questions, well, it’s a little uncomfortable, isn’t it? Am I deluding myself? Am I kidding myself? A lot of people when you ask them – “Are you going to heaven?” – will give you the John 3:16 answer – “Yeah, sure, I believe in Jesus” – I’m in! Hmm. But here’s an uncomfortable truth.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Look closely at yourselves. Test yourselves to see if you are living in the faith. Don’t you realise that Christ Jesus is in you? Of course, if you fail the test, he is not in you.

Over and over again God’s Word talks about the fact that the evidence of our faith, is how we live our lives. It’s not that what we do gets us into God’s favour. It’s not what we do, that gets us into heaven. That’s not it. We don’t work our way into heaven!

But what we do, is the evidence of what’s happening in our hearts. What we do, how we live, well that has to change, if deep in our heart, we’ve accepted Jesus Christ. It has to … doesn’t it?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
