Christ at Street Level
Matthew 25:45 The king will answer, ‘The truth is, anything you refused to do for any of my people here, you refused to do for me.’
So many Christians today long for Jesus to return in glory, and rightly so. We sing about it. We preach about it. Hallelujah! And yet, all too often, we walk straight past Him in disguise – the poor, the sick, the refugee, the forgotten. It’s a broken faith that looks to the skies but refuses to see the Christ at street level.
Time and again, history has demonstrated the tragedy of this blindness. During the Irish Potato Famine in the mid-1800s, while millions starved, food exports continued to be shipped out of Ireland to wealthy markets abroad. Political leaders justified it. Even some churches, instead of standing with the starving, aligned themselves with power.
Countless lives were lost because compassion gave way to comfort and faith shrank back in silence. It was a spectacular failure to recognise Jesus in the hungry and the oppressed.
Look, Jesus couldn’t have been clearer. Speaking about the final day of judgement, He said this of those who refused to help the poor, the needy, and the outcast.

Those words cut through our excuses. Following Christ isn’t just about waiting for clouds to part. It’s about recognising Him now – in the face of the refugee, in the eyes of the homeless, in the cries of the oppressed.
So here’s the challenge: are you gazing upward, longing for Christ’s return, but missing Him right in front of you? Because whatever you refuse to do for the least, you refuse to do for Jesus.
The call is simple. Open your eyes. Recognise Him. Serve Him. Love Him – by loving them.
