Don’t Lose the Plot

2 Timothy 1:13,14 Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. (NRSV)

Truth, as things turn out, is a difficult thing to hold on to in these last days. As the time draws nearer to Christ’s return, just as He predicted there are many intent on supplanting God’s wisdom and love with so-called human wisdom … with disastrous consequences.

You see it all around, don’t you – the forces of darkness chipping away at the truth of God’s amazing love for us through Jesus, His Son? And the further the world drifts from that good news, the greater is the pressure, on those of us who believe it, to be drawn into their lies.

It’s a pressure that’s coming at us from every direction: From political dogma, of one persuasion or another. From the deep decay of morality in today’s society. From the overriding emphasis on personal freedoms above collective responsibility.

Make no mistake, this is a devilish onslaught on the faith of everyone who dares to believe in Jesus. It’s spiritual, it’s emotional, it’s physical and we ignore its impact on our salvation completely at our peril.

But let’s not for one moment imagine that this is anything new:

2 Timothy 1:13,14 Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. (NRSV)

That was Paul writing to his ministry protégé Timothy, counselling him to hold onto the truth because those forces of darkness were alive and well back then, too. But how are we to guard the good treasure, the deposit of God’s grace and truth entrusted to us, in these dark times? With the help of the Holy Spirit living in us!

Hold on to the truth by the power of God. Never let it go.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
