Enjoying the Rules

Psalm 119:13-16 I will repeat the laws we have heard from you. I enjoy following your rules as much as others enjoy great riches. I will study your instructions. I will give thought to your way of life. I enjoy your laws. I will not forget your word.

From the youngest age, each one of us has been subject to rules. Our parents told us what we could and couldn’t do. And if you’re anything like me, as a child and as a teenager, I found those rules so burdensome, so frustrating.

I remember thinking often as I was growing up, how wonderful it would be one day to be free from the constraints that my parents imposed on me. I thought when I’m finally free, I’m going to cut loose, as it were. But then I joined the military. More rules. And after that, in business, in life … there were more rules.

Now, sure there are tyrants in this world. Some parents are tyrants. Some bosses are tyrants. But in the main, rules are there for our own good, even if sometimes we smart at them.

There’s a reason we have to drive on the same side of the road as everyone else, right?! There’s good reason that we have to constrain our behaviour in social settings. And in the same way, there’s good reason why God has some rules for us to live by.

The person who wrote Psalm 119, wrote it as a prayer to God. And He takes this understanding of “rules” to a whole new level:

Psalm 119:13-16 I will repeat the laws we have heard from you. I enjoy following your rules as much as others enjoy great riches. I will study your instructions. I will give thought to your way of life. I enjoy your laws. I will not forget your word.

Isn’t that just an awesome way of looking at things? God loves us so much that His “rules” aren’t just there for our own good – they’re there to enjoy. They’re there to give us life in all its abundance.

I will study your instructions. I will enjoy your laws.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
