Fear Obeys. Love Follows.

John 14:15-17 If you love me, you will do what I command. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever. The Helper is the Spirit of truth. The people of the world cannot accept him, because they don’t see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you.

Fear’s a powerful motivator. It keeps you in line, makes you comply, and even drives you to perform. But it never changes your heart. Because while fear may force compliance, only love inspires devotion

Have you ever worked in a place where the boss is a tyrant? Sure, things get done – but there’s no joy, no loyalty, no life. Contrast that with a healthy workplace, where people give more on the job because they feel valued, respected. The same outcome, but a completely different spirit.

That’s the difference between religion and relationship. Religion says, Do this or else. Jesus says, Follow Me – because I love you. In fact, He told His disciples:

John 14:15-17 If you love me, you will do what I command. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever. The Helper is the Spirit of truth. The people of the world cannot accept him, because they don’t see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you.

That wasn’t a threat. It was a statement of fact.  Fear obeys, but love follows.

Jesus’ obedience to His Father wasn’t driven by fear of rejection, but by love overflowing from intimacy. Even at the cross, love compelled Him to keep saying “yes.”

So, ask yourself – why do you obey God? Out of fear that He’ll punish you, or out of love that He’s already forgiven you? Because while fear may produce obedience for a while, only love can sustain it for a lifetime.

And when your obedience flows from love, it stops being duty. It becomes delight.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
