From Here to the Sun

Isaiah 53:5 He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. (NRSV)

How can a carpenter born in Nazareth two thousand years ago possibly be relevant to the life that you and I are leading here in the 21st century? How could that possibly be?

Imagine for a moment that you have a large piece of paper – a very large piece. You fold it in half. You fold it in half again. In fact, you repeat that fifty times (although no matter how large the paper is, in practical terms, you’d struggle to fold it in half more than seven times).

But humour me. Imagine that you could fold the paper in half again and again, fifty times. Now here’s my question: How thick is that piece of paper now? As thick as a telephone directory? As tall as a refrigerator perhaps? Or maybe, in your wildest dreams, right up to the ceiling?

Nope! If you could fold it in half fifty times, it would reach from the earth to the sun. I read that in a book, then I did the maths. It’s true. And if you could fold it just one more time – a fifty-first time – it would reach from the earth to the sun and all the way back again.

The point is that little things can have an incredible impact. Take a carpenter from Nazareth born two thousand years ago. So what?

Well, two thousand years on, He’s touched, and is still touching, billions of lives. Two thousand years on, He’s still healing the broken-hearted. Two thousand years on, He’s still loving, still saving, still whispering I came for you.

Isaiah 53:5 He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. (NRSV)

Little things can have an incredible impact. Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
