Full-on Sacrifice

Romans 12:1,2 I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. (NRSV)

Most of us would like to live a comfortable life. I mean, why not? Comfort, convenience, the world revolving around us. But life’s just not like that is it? And yet, we keep dreaming of comfort and convenience.

So let me ask you, do you like the notion of sacrifice; sacrificing your needs, your comfort, your way of doing things for someone else? For most of us, the answer is … not so much.

But actually, we do a lot of sacrificing in our lives. Whether it’s bringing up children, studying, building a career, playing a sport, anything worthwhile in life involves that dreaded “s” word – sacrifice. You have to give up something now in order to achieve something you want in the future. That’s what sacrifice is.

But when it comes to living our lives for Jesus, most of the time we’d prefer to take the easy option (as if there is one)!

Well, yeah, I know He calls me to take up my cross and follow Him, but, well, you know …

And then we wonder why this Christian life isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Really?!

(NRSV)

Listen up: if you want to get the most out of life, if you want to live out God’s good and acceptable and perfect will for your life, then let me tell you, it’s going to involve sacrifice. It just is.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
