Grace Isn’t a Free Pass

James 4:17 If you fail to do what you know is right, you are sinning.

Do you ever catch yourself thinking, “I know I shouldn’t … but it’s just this once”? Maybe it’s a compromise you’ve justified, a harsh word you didn’t bother to take back, or a step of obedience you keep putting off. Deep down, you know what’s right – you just don’t want to face it.

Yesterday, we talked about God’s unfailing faithfulness – that even when we fall, He never walks away. But that truth carries a dangerous temptation: to think that because grace covers us, obedience no longer matters.

It’s a bit like being pulled over for speeding. The officer lets you off with a warning, and for the next few days you drive carefully. But before long, the old habits creep back – until one day, you’re back where you started, only this time the consequences hit harder. Grace ignored eventually becomes judgment earned.

That’s exactly what Jesus’ brother James meant when he wrote this:

James 4:17 If you fail to do what you know is right, you are sinning.

James wasn’t scolding unbelievers; he was warning believers – people who knew the mercy of the cross but were drifting back into pride, envy, and self-indulgence. Grace doesn’t excuse sin; it exposes it so it can be healed.

The cross cost Jesus everything. To keep living as though sin doesn’t matter is to cheapen that sacrifice.

So, if the Holy Spirit’s been whispering about something you’re ignoring – a habit, a grudge, a compromise – listen. Grace isn’t God looking the other way. It’s His hand pulling you back before you fall again.

Because the One who forgives you … also calls you higher.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
