Have You Unwrapped the Gift?

Acts 2:38,39 Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Then God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for you.

Imagine for a moment that on one of those really significant birthdays, one with a zero on the end of it, the person you love most gives you a present all wrapped up with a big red bow. Wow! It brings tears to your eyes. So, what do you do? You put it unwrapped into a cupboard and forget all about it. Really? That just wouldn’t make sense.

And yet, that’s how many a Christian treats the gift of the Holy Spirit. Why do we do that?

Acts 2:38,39 Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Then God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for you.

Why do we do that? Perhaps because we don’t want to change our hearts and lives. Perhaps we don’t really understand who or what the Holy Spirit is. Perhaps we’re threatened by the power of God dwelling within us by His Spirit. Or perhaps … we don’t even think about it.

Listen to me. If you believe in Jesus, He means to transform your life, to set you free from the sin that’s bound you, to forgive you and to empower you to live a new life – a life as one of His children.

And if you receive Jesus as your Saviour, if you commit to changing your heart and your life for Him … then He will forgive you. Then He will give you the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Make no mistake, this gift is for you. Unwrap it … for Christ’s sake!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
