I am the Gate to Salvation

John 10:7-9 Jesus said again, “I assure you, I am the gate for the sheep. All those who came before me were thieves and robbers. The sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved. They will be able to come in and go out. They will find everything they need.”

You may have heard these words before: we all like sheep have gone astray. They were written by the prophet Isaiah. And they’re absolutely true. We all have, like sheep, gone astray.

I could write a rather thick book about all my going astray over my lifetime. I’m pretty certain you could too. And all that going astray has consequences. The mistakes we make when we wander off from God plunder our lives like a thief.

There seem to be so many things in this world, so many false prophets that lure us like the mythological sirens towards the dangerous, rocky shores of our sin. Yeah, there are consequences, but there’s also an alternative.

John 10:7-9 Jesus said again, “I assure you, I am the gate for the sheep. All those who came before me were thieves and robbers. The sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved. They will be able to come in and go out. They will find everything they need.”

During winter, the shepherds would bring their flocks into town and they’d go into a communal holding pen overnight. Every now and then, false shepherds would come to try and steal someone else’s sheep. But the sheep were smart. They didn’t listen to them because they knew their own shepherd’s voice.

Then quickly, Jesus switches the metaphor by saying I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved.

That’s the crunch line. That’s the bit we need to lay hold of afresh today. Don’t listen to all those false prophets out there. Don’t wander off to be lured back into your sin. Jesus. He is the gate to your salvation. Enter through Him. Trust in Him and Him alone.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
