Junk Food for the Heart
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (NIV)
We like to doddle along through life, doing the same things we’ve always done, hoping for a slightly better outcome each day, honestly, without ever stopping to think whether the ideas and the people whom we allow to influence us, are doing us good or harm.
We all know junk food is bad for us. We know that and yet, never in all of human history, have we eaten more sugar, refined carbohydrates, chemically manufactured oils and processed foods than right now.
Is it any surprise then that diabetes, heart attacks and stroke, cancer and dementia are all on the rise? Health budgets are completely out of control. Hospitals simply can’t cope.
Now, we know the problem but we don’t want to make the connection between what we’re eating and those appalling health outcomes. So, fact, we wear the consequences.
Three thousand years ago, one of the wisest men who ever walked the planet, King Solomon, wrote this:
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (NIV)
He wasn’t talking about the fist sized pump in your chest. He was talking about the very essence of who you are, the centre of your very being. And yet we keep on eating emotional and spiritual junk food – the television shows we choose to watch, the conversations we participate in, the lies of this world that we keep swallowing as we clamour for wealth and recognition.
All those things are every bit as deadly as the bad food that people keep shovelling down their gullets. And the consequences are obvious. The problem is, we don’t want to make the connection.
All that we are, all that we do, the very life that we lead, flows from the heart. Stop filling it with spiritual junk food.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
